"FreeWrite Exercise"

A freewrite is simple that a piece of writing freely off the top off your head. It is supposed ideas off the top off your head with no  filter. You shouldn't worry about grammar or spelling when doing a freewrite. The idea is you write down you true feelings without worry about any outside distractions all it like a fisrt draft of thoughts you pull some of you true feelings out for writing from frewrites.
Freewrites improve you're writing in many ways. By writing down the first thoughts that come to mind you not thinking of what someone who reads it is going to think or what grade your going to get. After you are done with a freewrite you go back reread it later thatt day or another day and the ideas you like from that freewrite you can advance on either in another freewrite or in your paper.
I was somewhat skeptical about freewrites thinking they were a waste of time. But after last semester freewrite notebook i realized it really helped me. I never understood why but writing just started getting easier. After reading up on freewrites it clicked I didn't even realize but i was using my freewrites as a very ruff draft but most of all was coming up with strong thesis by seeing strong points coming up again and again. Now I see that I got these good strong ideas because i could see how much they came up and were constantly on my mind. This made my writing better reflect my opinion.

  1. Hi Michael,

When writing my facts about a freewriting assignment, I got the same thoughts you have. I believe a freewrite is ideas off the top of your head as well. I also believe you write down what your true feelings are without worrying about any outside distractions.
I also strongly believe freewrites help in many ways such as writing down what comes to your mind without focusing on your grade. I did my first freewrite and felt a little acquard because I am in the habit of automatically correcting myself. It will be a bit of a challenge for my but I am looking forward to better writing skills.
    Good luck and have fun!

  2. I have been very skeptical of freewrites, too. It is because, up until now, I had never been told what a freewrite is or how to do one. It was really fun to just write anything that came to my mind. I think that what will be hard for me is to not correct myself. I am still in that habit. Hopefully these freewrite exercises will help me with that and will help me come up with great ideas for my future writing assignments.

  3. Hi Michael,

The point you make about reviewing your completed freewrite to decide on ideas to pull into an essay is important. It helps to freewrite on essay topics or any other required writing assignments. It provides a stress-free opportunity to generate ideas; once a writer has a freewrite, the writer can pull out ideas that should be in the essay. It helps writers to visually see their ideas, as opposed to trying to work off memory.

I like your point about using the freewrite to develop a thesis. It's tough to decide on what you want to argue or highlight about a topic, without first working through your ideas about the topic.

Thanks for giving me more to think about.

    Take care,
    Lauren

  4. Hi Michael,
In the past I have done certain things like brain storming and in one of my old English classes I had to do freewriting at the beginning of each class, but I never really felt that I got much from it. The instructor never really explained that he never was going to grade what we wrote about so I almost spent the whole time worry about what I was going to write. That completely goes against what freewriting is about.
I feel that freewriting will help in many ways not only to aid me in becoming a better writer, but to just get out the daily things that might be roaming in my head. Once things are on paper you or at least I tend not to stress on it so much.

  5. Hi Michael,

I really understand how you feel about free writes. I never really had to the. Before so I never knew what it was about or what the goal was at the end by completing a free write until after I read about it. After reading into it, I now understand how it can be used as another way to brainstorm to gather as much information as possible about anything on your mind and then just go back and see just how much info you know on that subject. I could definitely see how you could use this method to obtain a good thesis for an essay. It's also a good way to know if you know enough to support a thesis and if it would require more research on your part.
